CREATING A 'HAPPY PLACE' FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS

USING ANNUAL FLORAL DISPLAYS

Colors are the smiles of nature. - Leigh Hunt

Creating a pleasing atmosphere in any outdoor location is a true art form. Landscapers provide an essential service when planting annuals to make a visual impression for their clients and all who enter the space. Planting beds that are seen by the public benefit greatly from vibrant floral displays. It has been proven in many studies that the sight of flowers can change a person’s emotional state. In a tech-filled world, plants and their healing properties should be a top priority!

There is a mountain of research and articles on the benefits of nature and the impact it has on our health. Behavioral research conducted at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, cites “Nature provides us with a simple way to improve emotional health – flowers. The presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction, and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed.”

Plants and flowers, inside and out, make a strong impact on how people perceive the space they are in. For instance, traveling through a location where the medians of roads are planted with flowers and trees evoke a feeling of ease and comfort, it has also been proven to make streets safer, cutting down on accidents. Strolling through park or public space that is planted with an array of different greenery, flowers and colors, heightens your senses and creates curiosity. Both can create different emotions.

Choosing colors for a site can be daunting. Don’t let it be, below are a few things to keep in mind when designing for the public eye.

  • If an area has high visibility beds that are seen at higher speeds, just one variety of plants in bright colors will make the most impact. Choose plants like Whopper Begonias or bright colored SunPatiens.

  • Areas that people often meander through or sit in, you can mix it up a bit adding interest with assorted colors, heights, and textures. Decide what mood you would like to create, what will set the tone for the location. What will have the most impact for the people who will view it daily? In a nutshell, be the person enjoying the area, what would you like to see?
