THE BEAUTY OF NATURAL SPACES

“Let’s Talk” About the Beauty of Natural Spaces

What’s all the buzz at RCOP?

In 2021 RCOP purchased the property next door which allowed additional growing space. Doing so also enabled RCOP to increase the established wetland/retention area at the back of the property. It has been doubled in size so there is more room for the pollinators and birds to explore and work their magic. If you ever are visiting RCOP to look at crops or just stopping by for a friendly hello, ask to see our Wetland area, it’s all the buzz in the fall. There are hundreds if not thousands of varied species of Bees, Wasps, Hornets, and a host of other flying insects, along with a nice bird population. You will be memorized at the sound and the action that is taking place before your eyes. It is a beautiful sight!

Why the need for more Wetlands and Natural areas?

The need for native areas and wetlands to be restored is crucial. According to the Audubon news the US has lost 150 million acres of bird habitat and open native land to the expansion of urban areas, and it doesn’t look like it will be slowing any time soon. The areas that remain natural are not large enough to support current wildlife. The choices we make in our landscape decisions affect the sustainability of wildlife. Selecting native plantings and enlarging native areas will benefit the bird and pollinator population for the future.

Added benefit of pollinators

Our ornamental pepper production method has changed in the past few years. Once a crop strictly grown inside has been moved outside for part of the grow time. Because of the use of Biocontrol’s at RCOP there is no pesticide residue, our peppers benefit from the pollination process. During the time spent outside you will see a delightful selection of pollinators visiting the pepper crops. Because of the pollination taking place the fruit has increased on the plants by about 10%. It’s a win, win for RCOP.
