Pollinators in Peril: Plan Early, Plant Smart
New research has found that over 22% of native pollinators in North America are at near dangerous levels of becoming extinct. The pollinators evaluated included bees, butterflies, moths, flower flies, bats and our beloved hummingbirds! Click this link for more information.
Almost 90% of wild flowering plants and 75% of food crops rely on pollinators for successful seed and fruit production. Without pollinators plants would struggle to survive.
You can help by:
- Planting annuals in garden beds and containers to create nectar-rich fueling stations.
- Providing blooms from Early Spring through Fall to support migrating pollinators.
- Avoiding harmful insecticides and pesticides, especially those that impact bees.
- Choosing native plants that offer the right food at the right time
Bees play a vital role in our food systems, and their alarming decline poses a serious threat to biodiversity and global food security. Fortunately, through thoughtful planting and sustainable practices, we can help reverse this trend. In support of reducing harmful chemical use, RCOP has launched a biological program, empowering us all to be part of the movement for healthier ecosystems.
